How to Add Meta Descriptions in Shopify

The meta description is the little grey line under your link in Google — and on most Shopify stores it's left blank. Here's exactly where to add one for every type of page, how long it should be, and paste-ready examples that turn more searchers into clicks.

A meta description is the short summary search engines show beneath your page title in the results. It doesn't appear on the page itself, and it isn't a direct ranking factor — but it does one crucial job: it convinces a searcher to click your result instead of the one above or below it. On a Shopify store, leaving these blank means Google grabs a random sentence from your page — often a size chart, a shipping notice or a half-finished line of copy. Writing your own puts you back in control of that first impression. This guide covers where to add them for products, collections, pages and blog posts, plus the length rules and examples that make each one earn its click.

Where Shopify hides the meta description field

The meta description isn't in the main description box — the one where you write your product details. It lives in a separate panel called Search engine listing, which sits near the bottom of the edit screen for every product, collection, page and blog post. By default it shows a preview of how your listing looks in Google, with an Edit button beside it. Click Edit and two fields appear: the page title (your title tag) and the meta description. That second box is the one you're after.

How to add a meta description to a Shopify product

Products are where this matters most, because they carry the highest buying intent. Here's the exact path:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to the Search engine listing section and click Edit.
  3. In the Meta description box, write a 140–160 character summary that names the product and one clear reason to buy.
  4. Click Save. The change goes live on your storefront immediately, though Google may take days to refresh what it shows.

A strong product meta description reads like a mini advert, not a spec sheet:

Hand-poured soy candles in 8 scents. Clean burn, 50+ hours, plastic-free packaging. Free UK delivery over £30 & 30-day returns.

Collections, pages and blog posts

The process is identical everywhere Shopify shows a Search engine listing panel — only the emphasis changes:

Collections

Go to Products › Collections, open one, and edit the listing. Describe the range and who it's for: "Shop our full range of merino base layers for winter running and hiking."

Pages

Under Online Store › Pages, open a page like About or FAQ. Summarise what the visitor will find so the snippet matches their intent.

Blog posts

Under Online Store › Blog posts, open an article and edit its listing. Preview the takeaway, not the intro paragraph, so it reads as a reason to click.

Your homepage is the one exception — its meta description is set under Online Store › Preferences, in the Homepage meta description field, rather than on an individual record.

How long should a Shopify meta description be?

Aim for roughly 140 to 160 characters, including spaces. Google generally displays up to about 155–160 characters on desktop and noticeably fewer on mobile, so the safest habit is to front-load your most important words and read like the line could be cut off at 120 and still make sense. Shopify will happily let you type a paragraph, but everything past the display limit is trimmed with an ellipsis — wasted effort that a shopper never sees.

Why the meta description is worth the ten minutes

Think of search results as a shelf of competing labels. Your title tag is the product name; your meta description is the sentence that makes someone reach for it. Two stores can rank in the same position, but the one with a sharper description wins more of the clicks — and click -through, sustained over time, feeds back into where you rank. It's one of the rare SEO tasks that's fully in your control, needs no code, and shows up in the results within days.

Meta descriptions also pair tightly with your title tags and page copy. If you're tightening product listings across the board, our guide to Shopify product page SEO covers titles, descriptions, alt text and schema together, and the Shopify SEO checklist puts meta descriptions in context with the other store-wide basics worth fixing.

A quick way to fix them all at once

Editing meta descriptions one product at a time is fine for a small catalogue, but it's slow going once you have dozens or hundreds of pages — and it's easy to miss the ones sitting blank. Rather than clicking through every record, run a scan of your store first. Our scanner inspects your live pages and flags exactly which products, collections, pages and posts have a missing, duplicated or over-length meta description, then hands you a prioritised list. You start with the pages that get the most impressions — the ones where a better description buys you the most extra clicks — and see the result reflected in your overall SEO health score as you work through them.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I add a meta description in Shopify?

Open any product, collection, page or blog post in your Shopify admin, scroll to the Search engine listing section, and click Edit. The meta description field is the box under the page title field. Type your description there and save. It's separate from your on-page product or collection description.

How long should a Shopify meta description be?

Aim for roughly 140 to 160 characters. Google typically displays up to about 155–160 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile, so front-load the most important words. Shopify lets you type more, but anything past the limit is usually cut off with an ellipsis in search results.

Do meta descriptions help Shopify SEO rankings?

They're not a direct ranking factor, but they strongly influence click-through rate. A clear, benefit-led description makes more people choose your result, and higher click-through over time is a positive signal. Leaving them blank lets Google auto-generate a snippet you can't control.

What happens if I leave the Shopify meta description blank?

Google will automatically pull a snippet from somewhere on the page, often the first sentence of your product or collection copy. This is frequently generic, truncated or off-topic. Writing your own description gives you control over the first impression a shopper sees in search results.

How do I find which Shopify pages are missing meta descriptions?

Run a free scan of your store with our scanner. It inspects your live pages and flags every product, collection, page and blog post with a missing, duplicate or too-long meta description, then gives you a prioritised, paste-ready list so you fix the pages losing the most clicks first.
